Hiking trails and autumn nature walk guide near Futtsu

The Futtsu area of Chiba, where the autumn breeze blows through, is a series of gentle low mountains around 300 meters above sea level, making it a great trekking area where everyone from beginners to experienced hikers can easily enjoy nature and history. We will introduce two major routes recommended for walking between October and November, when the intense heat is gone and the trees begin to change color, as well as practical advice for walking safely.

Route 1: Stunning views of strange rocks and the sky! “Nogiriyama/back mountain trail course” (about 3 hours walking)

  • Target level: Intermediate (includes steep stairs and rocky areas)
  • Highlights: Depart from Hamakanaya Station and proceed along the Sharikimichi'' that goes around the ruins of a former stone quarry. The huge vertical stone walls that appear in the dense evergreen forest are as impressive as ancient ruins. From the summit observation deck, Jigoku Nozoki,’’ you can see Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and Mt. Fuji. The easiest way to descend the mountain is to take the Kanto Fureai no Michi route towards the ropeway station. Trekking shoes are required as the footing can be slippery.

Route 2: Sunbeams filtering through the trees and a panoramic view of a sea of clouds “Shikanoyama/Kujukudani Walk” (walking approximately 1.5 hours)

  • Target level: Beginner/Family (maintained promenade)
  • Highlight: The area around Mt. Kano, which is also close to Mother Farm, has gentle ups and downs, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll. The road that leads from Shiratori Shrine to Kujukutani Observation Park is beautiful in autumn when the leaves of the Quercus oak and maple turn beautiful, and on clear early mornings you can sometimes see a mysterious sea of clouds with mist waving over the many layers of the Boso mountains. There are many paved roads, so you can enjoy walking in comfortable sneakers.

Three things to keep in mind when hiking in the low mountains in autumn

  1. Early sunset: In the mountains in autumn, it gets dark all at once after 4 p.m. Be sure to plan a time to return to the trailhead by 3pm.
  2. Carry water and cold weather gear: Even if you are at a low altitude, you will be exposed to strong sea breezes when you go out on the ridge. Make sure to pack cold-weather clothing that is easy to put on and take off, such as a windbreaker or fleece, in your backpack.
  3. Slippery wet leaves: After autumn rain, moss and wet leaves accumulate on rocks in the shade and cause unexpected falls. Having one stock available will greatly improve your walking stability.

After descending the mountain, the best finale to your Futtsu hike is to take a dip in the hot springs near Kanaya Port and enjoy local seafood cuisine.
